Then his class did a project called The People Who Keep Us Going.
Every child had to interview a grown-up who worked at the school and write about them.
Everybody wanted the football coach. Tom chose last, and got the cleaner.
He was not happy about it. He went out to the bins with his list of questions and a grumpy face.
"What is your name?" was question one.
"Mr. Rana," said the man. He looked very surprised to be asked. Then he put down his bin bag and smiled.
After that, it got interesting.
Mr. Rana had been an engineer in the country he came from. He had three daughters. The oldest one was studying to be a doctor.
He had a photo of all of them in his wallet. He took it out and opened it very carefully. The fold had gone white in the middle, from being opened so many times.
He got up at four o'clock every morning.
And he knew the name of every single child in the school.
"You know mine?" said Tom.
"Tom," said Mr. Rana. "You leave your jumper on the field on Wednesdays. I put it in lost property."
