Tom's project was eleven pages long. It was the longest thing he had ever written.
He read it out to the class. When he got to the part about the jumper, some children turned and looked at the door, as if they were seeing something for the first time.
Miss Chan pinned all eleven pages along the back wall.
After that, small things changed.
People said good morning, Mr. Rana. People carried their own trays back. Somebody made him a card at Christmas, and then everybody did. He kept every single one. He put them up in the little room where he kept his mop.
"You changed the whole school," said Tom's mum.
"I did not do anything," said Tom. "I asked him his name. That is where respect starts."
