"He barks to say hello," said the neighbour. "He is loud, but he is kind."
The next day, Lily stood at the fence again. Rex did not bark for long.
The day after, she held out her flat hand. Rex licked it. His tongue was warm.
It tickled! Lily laughed, and Rex wagged even harder.
By the end of the month, Lily used the short path every day.
She always stopped to rub Rex's ears. Rex waited by the fence for her every day.
"That took courage," said Dad.
"But I was still scared," said Lily.
"That is what courage is," said Dad.
